Observations of Winter Ablation on Glaciers in the Mount Everest Region in 2020–2021

Recent observations of rising snow lines and reduced snow-covered areas on glaciers during the October 2020–January 2021 period in Nepal–China region Mount Everest Landsat Sentinel imagery highlight that significant ablation has occurred recent years many Himalayan post-monsoon early winter periods. For first time, we now have weather stations providing real-time data may sufficiently transect line elevation region. These sensors been placed by Rolex National Geographic Perpetual Planet expedition. Combining situ records remote sensing provides a unique opportunity to examine impact warm dry conditions 2020 through 2020/2021 The season extended January 2021. Winter (DJF) ERA5 reanalysis temperature reconstructions for Base Camp (5315 m) 1950–February indicate six days 10–15 fell top 1% all since 1950, with 13, 14, 12, being first, second, third warmest 72-year period. This also led highest freezing levels 1950–2021 period, 12–14 only level above 6000 m.
